Major League Baseball proposed Thursday to shorten the regular season from 162 to 154 games starting in 2029 and expand the Division Series to best-of-seven, the Associated Press reported, as owners bargain with players on a new labor deal.
Owners also proposed letting higher-seeded teams in the first two playoff rounds choose their opponents starting next year, and making Monday a day off for most teams beginning in 2029, except for one or two nationally broadcast games.
“Returning to a 154-game schedule would allow us to introduce a weekly off day, which is good for player health,” MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said. Fewer games would also reduce players’ chances to set season and career records.
