Vice President JD Vance announced Thursday that Microsoft was being suspended from a program that lets companies apply for green cards for skilled foreign workers on H-1B visas, just hours before President Donald Trump planned to honor Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and other tech leaders, the Associated Press reported.
Vance, who leads a fraud task force, accused the company of abusing the visa system. “Our message to Microsoft is: You’re a great American company, but you’ve got to hire great American workers,” he said.
The move highlighted tension between the companies driving U.S. economic growth and the administration’s effort to reduce immigration it says has come at the expense of American workers.
