After Early Ballot Mix-Up, Can Maricopa County Replace Its Election Vendor? Galvin Weighs In

A 'Vote Here' sign at a polling place

PHOENIX — Maricopa County Supervisor Thomas Galvin said Thursday that the county could revisit its election vendor contracts, but not until after the Nov. 3 election, following an error that sent ballots out early.

Phoenix-based Runbeck Election Services delivered 3,126 mail ballots to the U.S. Postal Service six days before early voting started. Officials said the ballots went to the correct voters and remain valid, KTAR News reported.

Galvin told The Mike Broomhead Show that contracts are reviewed when they come up for bid, with the Recorder’s Office indicating which vendors it prefers. He said Runbeck is one of the few companies able to handle the printing and processing demands of the nation’s second-largest voting jurisdiction, and that the county likely couldn’t do the work without outside companies.

Runbeck provides election services in 34 states and the District of Columbia.
