PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego said Thursday that Arizona State University should have fired hockey coach Greg Powers as soon as it learned about a military-style workout that left player Matthew Mayich on life support.
“I would have fired him in a second,” Gallego said on KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce & Gaydos.
Players were reportedly put through Navy SEAL-style training and denied water. Gallego, a Marine Corps combat veteran, said even in his toughest training “we’re always hydrating” and that a head coach is responsible for players’ health.
In the same interview, Gallego predicted strong Democratic results in November and warned that President Donald Trump may try to interfere with the election.
