Margaret Hamilton, the computer scientist who led the MIT team that wrote the onboard flight software for NASA’s Apollo missions, has died at 90, the Associated Press reported Thursday.

Her daughter, Lauren Hamilton, said she died Sept. 30 at a hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said her work helped make humanity’s first journeys to the moon possible.

Hamilton worked in software when the field was in its infancy and later became a celebrated symbol of women in technology. “To say Margaret Hamilton was a pioneer, to say she was ahead of her time, would be a dramatic understatement,” MIT professor Olivier de Weck told MIT News.
