PHOENIX — Zion Teasley pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the April 2023 stabbing death of Lauren Heike on a north Phoenix hiking trail, court officials said, a deal that is expected to send him to prison for natural life and spare a capital trial.
Heike, 29, was found stabbed 15 times on the Reach 11 trail near 64th Street and Mayo Boulevard, close to her apartment, on April 28, 2023. Investigators later linked Teasley through DNA on her shoe, cellphone location data, and surveillance video, according to Arizona’s Family, FOX 10, and KTAR. Police said she had been chased and fought her attacker before her injuries proved fatal.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office had filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty in January 2024. A Superior Court spokesperson told KTAR the new plea calls for natural life. As part of the agreement, Teasley also pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor tied to a separate indictment involving sexually explicit images of a child; a 2020 burglary charge was dismissed, FOX 10 reported.
Sentencing for both the murder and exploitation convictions is scheduled for Dec. 4, 2026. Teasley had previously entered a not-guilty plea in May 2023. Motive in Heike’s killing has not been publicly established.
The case drew wide attention after Heike was found on a trail she regularly used near the Phoenix-Scottsdale border. Family and friends have waited more than three years for a courtroom resolution short of a death-penalty trial.
