Supreme Court Leaves Intact $122,000 in Sanctions Against Kari Lake’s Lawyers Over Hand-Count Suit

The U.S. Supreme Court

PHOENIX — The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to throw out $122,000 in legal costs that lawyers for former gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake were ordered to pay over false and misleading claims in a lawsuit seeking a hand count of all ballots in the 2022 election, the Associated Press reported.

The court denied a request from Andrew D. Parker, one of Lake’s attorneys, to review a lower-court ruling. The sanctions apply to the lawyers, not to Lake or her co-plaintiff, Mark Finchem.

Lake and Finchem sued to ban electronic tabulators before the 2022 midterms. A judge dismissed the case, finding they lacked standing and had filed too close to the election. Maricopa County then sought sanctions, and U.S. District Judge John Tuchi ruled against the attorneys.

Lake lost the 2022 governor’s race to Katie Hobbs, and Finchem lost the secretary of state’s race to Adrian Fontes.
