Race Against Winter to Catch Luna, Terrier Loose in Yellowstone for a Month

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — A small dog loose in Yellowstone for a month has been seen crossing intersections, wandering through employee housing and walking into lodges through automatic doors, but volunteers say time is running out to catch her, The Associated Press reported via KTAR News.

Luna, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier from California, got out when housekeeping opened her family’s cabin despite a do-not-disturb sign, said Katie Boucher, president of the Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center in Montana, who is leading the search.

Staff chased Luna for more than two hours before her owners returned, Boucher said. The family was told she had likely died or been eaten by a coyote, but sightings soon followed.

Boucher said Luna is retracing her family’s steps, slipping into eateries and lodges they visited. Before being adopted, the dog spent her first year surviving on the streets.

Volunteers set a humane trap scented with her family’s smell rather than food, which could attract bears. People calling her name or chasing her only push her deeper into the park, Boucher said.

“Hopefully she has decided that winter in Yellowstone National Park is not a good vacation,” she said.
