PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A business jet crashed near homes in Palm Beach County on Sunday afternoon, killing all nine people aboard, officials said, according to CBS News and NPR.
The Learjet 60 went down just before 1 p.m. after leaving Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas for the Bahamas, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
No one on the ground was hurt, Gov. Ron DeSantis said. About 600 people were evacuated near a mobile home park in Cresthaven.
‘It was like a missile coming down and a massive explosion, debris going everywhere,’ DeSantis said.
Air traffic control audio captured the pilot declaring an emergency and reporting an ‘overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute,’ CBS News reported.
Federal investigators are looking into the cause.
