Justice Elena Kagan said Tuesday that decisions by her conservative colleagues on voting and elections have made the country more polarized and less democratic, the Associated Press reported.
“The court has kind of blinded itself to the very deleterious effect of their rulings on how the political system works,” Kagan told students and faculty at Catholic University’s law school in Washington.
She pointed to rulings that weakened the Voting Rights Act and campaign finance rules and opened the door to more partisan gerrymandering, all decisions she dissented from. Both parties, she said, are now in “a race to the bottom” on gerrymandering.
The remarks came two weeks before midterm elections that will decide control of Congress.
