Hurricane Isaias came ashore near Destin, Florida, around 8:30 p.m. CDT Friday as a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 105 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.
A gauge in Panama City Beach measured water about 5.6 feet above normal high tide. A weather station near Santa Rosa Sound recorded a 116 mph gust, and Pensacola had gusts near 100 mph. Isaias is the first hurricane of what has been an unusually quiet Atlantic season.
The storm weakened quickly over land. By early Saturday it was a post-tropical cyclone over southern Alabama, and forecasters expected it to dissipate Sunday. Its remnants were forecast to drop 4 to 8 inches of rain on the Panhandle and Big Bend, with as much as 15 inches in some places.
Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 27 counties. By Tuesday, the state had confirmed six storm-related deaths.
