DETROIT — Georgia O’Keeffe is famous for flowers, bones and Southwest landscapes, but a new exhibit puts her paintings of buildings in the spotlight, according to CBS News.
‘Georgia O’Keeffe: Architecture’ at the Detroit Institute of Arts looks at the places where the artist lived and worked through her own paintings, curator Ben Colman told CBS News.
‘Curiously, flower pictures represent only about 10% of her artwork,’ Colman said.
O’Keeffe completed about 140 architectural paintings over her career, from the Wisconsin dairy farm where she was born in 1887 to the Manhattan skyline of the 1920s.
Colman said she chose subjects that would not be seen as typically feminine, as when she painted ‘My Shanty, Lake George.’
O’Keeffe later became closely tied to the Southwest, making the show a draw for fans of desert art from Arizona and New Mexico.
