WASHINGTON — A federal judge on Tuesday extended an order blocking the Trump administration from banning reporters for CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, The Associated Press reported via KTAR News.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that the outlets are likely to succeed on their constitutional free speech and due process claims and issued a preliminary injunction preserving the status quo while the case continues.
Kelly, who was nominated by Trump, had earlier ordered the White House to restore the reporters’ “hard pass” credentials. That temporary order was set to expire Tuesday.
“Still,” the judge wrote, “no one should interpret the Court’s decision to suggest that President Trump’s concerns about accuracy and fairness in the media’s reporting are unfounded, or that the government is powerless when its true aim is to protect national security when classified information is unlawfully disclosed.”
The outlets sued after the administration moved to bar their reporters from the White House in mid-September.
The case is one of several legal fights between the administration and news organizations.
