PROVO, Utah — Freshman quarterback Jake Fette nearly led Arizona State all the way back in his first career start, but No. 8 BYU held on for a 27-20 win Saturday, Arizona Sports reported.

ASU trailed 17-3 at halftime after several missed chances. After a defensive three-and-out to open the third quarter, Fette capped a 13-play, 81-yard drive with his first career touchdown pass, a 20-yarder to Omarion Miller on third-and-2.

Linebacker Owen Long then forced a fumble, and Fette directed a gritty 12-play scoring drive that included a fourth-down catch by Derek Eusebio off a tipped pass. Fette’s second touchdown pass tied the game at 17 late in the third quarter.

BYU retook the lead, and with ASU down 20-17 near midfield and just over eight minutes left, coach Kenny Dillingham chose to punt on fourth-and-4. Cougars quarterback Bear Bachmeier then led a drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run for a 27-17 lead with about two minutes left.

Freshman running back Cardae Mack posted another 100-yard game for the Sun Devils, according to Arizona Sports. Dillingham said Fette will remain the starter, Arizona’s Family reported.

ASU falls to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Big 12. BYU improves to 7-1 and 4-1.
