FLAGSTAFF — Ghost hunters are checking into downtown Flagstaff’s historic hotels this Halloween weekend, hoping to spot one of the spirits said to haunt the city, Arizona’s Family reported.

The Monte Vista Hotel, which has welcomed guests for 99 years, advertises five haunted rooms. The best known is Room 306, where, according to legend, two women were thrown from the window.

“There’s rumors when men go in there that sometimes they feel a pressing on their throat, or something sat on them and they can’t fall back asleep,” said Bary Brown, who works the front desk. Brown said he has not seen a ghost himself but believes, and that many guests request specific rooms because of the stories.

Ron Jamiolkowski, a paranormal investigator from Phoenix, stayed next door in Room 305 on Thursday night. “This was like a bucket list,” he said, describing a ghost said to be an elderly woman who sits in the rocking chair looking out the window. He did not capture any evidence Thursday and planned to try again Friday.

A few blocks away, the Weatherford Hotel is also said to have a few ghosts, and a spirit of a man is said to visit the downtown train station, according to Arizona’s Family.

Flagstaff’s haunted history is part of what draws visitors north each fall, along with cooler weather and the historic downtown along Route 66.
