NEW YORK — Bodum USA is recalling 5.9 million French press coffee makers because the glass carafe can break and burn users, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The company has received 70 reports of carafes breaking, 48 of which resulted in burns, CBS News reported.
The presses were sold at Amazon, Target, Walmart and other stores between 1974 and October 2026. Models include 8-cup French presses and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models. The recall number is 27-055.
The carafes can break unexpectedly if damaged or cracked, which can happen when people stir with metal spoons, the agency said.
Owners should not stir with metal utensils and should stop using cracked or damaged carafes. Customers can contact Bodum for a free plastic stirring spoon at 888-879-8213. A customer service representative told CBS News the company is not offering refunds.
“While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low… this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers,” Bodum USA said.
