Crashes Close I-17 at Thomas Road and I-40 Near Winslow: ADOT

An Arizona interstate highway

PHOENIX — Crashes shut down stretches of two Arizona interstates Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 28, according to alerts from the Arizona Department of Transportation.

In Phoenix, ADOT said at 2:49 p.m. that northbound Interstate 17 was closed at Thomas Road because of a crash near milepost 201. The agency reported at 5 p.m. that the northbound lanes had reopened, after more than two hours of rush-hour disruption in central Phoenix.

In northern Arizona, ADOT said at 2:28 p.m. that eastbound Interstate 40 was closed because of a crash at milepost 268, about 13 miles east of Winslow. A 2:49 p.m. update said one eastbound lane had reopened while the other remained closed.

ADOT did not release details about how many vehicles were involved in either crash or whether anyone was injured.

I-17 is the main north-south freeway through the heart of Phoenix, and I-40 is the primary east-west route across northern Arizona for commercial trucks and travelers headed to New Mexico.

Drivers can check current conditions and closures at az511.gov, on the AZ511 app, or by dialing 511.
