NEW YORK — Polling places could see more observers on Nov. 3 than at any time in modern U.S. history, the Associated Press reported, as Democrats, watchdog groups, Republican-aligned organizations and the Justice Department all plan to monitor the vote.
Democratic and nonprofit groups, including Common Cause and the ACLU, are training tens of thousands of volunteers to watch outside polling places and report problems, driven by worries that President Donald Trump will use federal power to interfere in the midterms.
The Justice Department is preparing its largest-ever election monitoring program, and Republican-aligned groups are sending observers of their own. The Democratic National Committee has also set up a cybersecurity unit staffed by former CIA and FBI officials to track misinformation, including AI deepfakes, said DNC Vice Chair Jane Kleeb.
In Arizona, faith groups have trained “poll chaplains” and peacekeepers, including at a session in Scottsdale earlier this month.
