UNITED NATIONS — Use of nuclear power worldwide could more than triple by 2060, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency told the U.N. General Assembly on Friday, the Associated Press reported.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said growth will be driven by electrification, artificial intelligence data centers and technology companies’ demand for reliable, carbon-free electricity.
He said more than 400 reactors in over 30 countries produced 10% of the world’s electricity in 2025 and a quarter of its low-carbon power, and that more than 60 new reactors are under construction.
Grossi also addressed nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea, safety threats from the war in Ukraine and reports that other unnamed countries are discussing acquiring nuclear weapons.
Arizona is home to the Palo Verde Generating Station west of Phoenix, the largest nuclear power plant in the United States by generation.
