BERCHTESGADEN, Germany — German police detained a suspect after a fire tore through the Kehlsteinhaus, the mountaintop building known as Adolf Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, CBS News reported.
Police in Upper Bavaria South said they were alerted around 9:15 p.m. local time Friday. The building was “completely engulfed in flames” when firefighters arrived, though no one was inside and no injuries were reported. Crews had trouble reaching the site because of the terrain.
Police said a suspect came to investigators’ attention shortly after the fire started, and one person was taken into custody as the cause is investigated as a crime.
Completed in 1938 at about 6,017 feet above the Obersalzberg area, the Eagle’s Nest escaped Allied bombing in World War II and later became a tourist site with a restaurant and beer garden.
