WASHINGTON — First lady Melania Trump’s office said Friday that she secured a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky so humanitarian aid can enter and civilians can be evacuated, CBS News reported.

According to the announcement, both countries agreed to halt military action in the southern Ukrainian city beginning Thursday, Oct. 29, and to allow a designated safe corridor for an evacuation.

The first lady’s office said she worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders on the terms. In a statement, she described Oleshky as a front-line city “on the brink of disaster,” where mostly elderly residents lack medical care, food, clean water and reliable electricity.

Russia and Ukraine had not commented publicly on the announcement, though Ukrainian officials indicated there was a tentative agreement, CBS reported.

It is unusual for a first lady’s office to announce a diplomatic agreement of this kind.
