TRAPPES, France — A gunman shooting from his car killed one person and wounded five others, including a 12-year-old girl, in the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday in what French officials are treating as a racially motivated terrorist attack, CBS News reported.
President Emmanuel Macron called it “a racist terror attack,” saying the victims were targeted because of their skin color or perceived religion and that the suspect’s statements pointed to premeditation.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the gunman fired at passersby in three places in Trappes and neighboring La Verrière, including a playground. He said three of the wounded were in critical condition.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the suspect appeared to use a military-grade or automatic weapon and that the attack lasted just under 15 minutes before five officers from an anti-crime unit stopped him. The suspect was arrested in nearby Coignières.
