Toledo, Ohio, fire officials ordered people within a 1-mile radius of an ongoing hazardous materials release to evacuate late Tuesday and told residents in a wider 3-mile ring to shelter in place, the Associated Press reported.

The evacuation order came at about 10:50 p.m. The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department did not name the chemical but said it can burn the eyes, nose, mouth and skin. Symptoms of overexposure include headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.

“You can’t tell fog from the release by looking, so please don’t rely on how the air looks,” the department said, urging anyone who smells an unusual odor to stay inside, close windows and turn off ventilation that pulls in outside air.

The release was still ongoing early Wednesday. Some schools closed and others delayed their start.
