Scottsdale Moves to Drop Flock Safety, Orders Tough New License Plate Reader Ordinance

Scottsdale City Hall

SCOTTSDALE — Scottsdale is preparing to end its relationship with Flock Safety and write new rules for automated license plate readers, KTAR News reported.

The City Council voted unanimously on a broad motion after police officials argued the cameras make the city safer. The motion states the city does not intend to renew its Flock contract when it expires June 30, 2027, directs staff to look into terminating it, and to prepare a transition to another vendor.

Staff were also told to draft an ordinance giving the city more control over data ownership, privacy and security, including criminal penalties for misuse. It is expected on the Dec. 1 council agenda.

“Public safety and our residents’ right to privacy should never be viewed as competing priorities,” Mayor Lisa Borowsky said. Several Arizona cities have dropped Flock amid concerns about mass surveillance.
