PHOENIX — A large fire at a recycling yard near 19th Avenue and McDowell Road sent a column of dark smoke over central Phoenix on Saturday before firefighters got it under control, ABC15 and Arizona’s Family reported.
The Phoenix Fire Department was called around 9:15 a.m. for what was first reported as a debris fire. Crews arriving on scene found heavy flames and smoke coming from inside the yard, and the response was upgraded to a second alarm because of the fire’s size.
Firefighters later declared fire control. No injuries were reported in the initial accounts, and the cause had not been announced.
Smoke from the fire was visible across much of the Valley Saturday morning.
