Registered Sex Offender, 29, Accused of Posing as 17-Year-Old to Enroll in Minnesota High School

Maple Grove, Minnesota

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — A 29-year-old registered sex offender from Oregon has been arrested after allegedly trying to enroll at a Minnesota high school by claiming to be a homeless 17-year-old girl, Gray News reported, citing Minneapolis station KARE.

Staff at Maple Grove Senior High School alerted police about a person seeking to enroll as a “homeless youth” who said she was “Molly” from Oregon. Investigators identified the person as Makayla Craig. Police said Craig never finished enrolling, never attended classes in person or online, and was never on campus as a student.

According to KARE, Craig told police they had never attended school and wanted to “get the full experience.” Portland station KGW reported that Craig was jailed for 40 days in 2024 after posing as a 15-year-old homeless teen named “Madison” and enrolling at an Oregon high school.

Craig has prior convictions including sexual abuse of a minor in 2023, and faces an outstanding warrant in an Oregon theft case. Bail was set at $200,000 without conditions or $100,000 with conditions that include a mental health evaluation and staying away from minors and K-12 schools.
