PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department on Friday released body camera footage of an Oct. 10 shooting in south Phoenix, revealing that the man officers killed was armed with a BB gun, KTAR News reported.
Officers were sent to an apartment complex near Central and Southern avenues after a 911 caller reported a man walking around with a gun and a knife and mumbling to himself, according to police.
In the critical incident briefing video, the man walks out of an apartment still holding both items. Officers repeatedly order him to raise his hands and drop the gun. When he does not, they fire a less-lethal PepperBall launcher.
Police said the man then raised the weapon toward officers, and one officer fired a rifle, striking him. He died from his injuries. Investigators later determined the gun was a BB gun.
The man’s name has not been released. ABC15 reported he was 24. The department warned that the video contains graphic images.
