PHOENIX — Arizonans planning to travel with pets face new requirements as New World screwworm cases rise, AZFamily reported.
According to Arizona’s State Veterinarian’s Office, anyone traveling from Arizona to California with a pet must now show proof the animal is not infected with screwworm, effective immediately. Additional rules apply for animals from infested zones around Sierra Vista, Elfrida and Safford.
State officials said other states are following USDA guidance, with Florida imposing even stricter rules.
Arizona has confirmed five cases, including a Graham County dog reported Friday. Owners should check the state veterinarian’s guidance before traveling and inspect animals’ wounds daily.
