Maricopa County says 99% of general election ballots are now tabulated

Ballots being counted

PHOENIX — Maricopa County has processed and tabulated 99% of the more than 1.57 million ballots cast in Tuesday’s general election, according to a statement Friday evening, Nov. 6, from Board of Supervisors Chair Kate Brophy McGee.

Brophy McGee said the milestone came about 72 hours after polls closed in what she called the nation’s third-largest voting jurisdiction. She credited the county Elections Department and more than 4,000 poll workers who staffed vote centers on Election Day.

About 2,500 provisional ballots still need to be processed, according to the statement. Roughly 10,750 more ballots have an issue, such as a signature problem, that must be “cured” by the voter.

Under state law, voters have until 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, to resolve those issues. Voters who were contacted by the county about a ballot problem should respond before that deadline so their ballot can be counted.

“I offer my gratitude to those permanent and temporary Elections Department staff who will continue working until every lawful vote is processed and tabulated,” Brophy McGee said on behalf of the board.

All results reported so far are unofficial. Counties must still finish counting and canvass their results before the statewide canvass certifies the election. A few close races in Arizona have not been called, and the remaining ballots could matter in those contests.

Updated unofficial results are posted on the Maricopa County Elections Department website.
