CAMP VERDE — Fast-rising water flooded or destroyed more than a dozen homes in Camp Verde as the Verde River and nearby creeks surged after a weekend of heavy rain, Arizona’s Family reported Monday.
The flooding was tied to the Verde River, West Clear Creek and Wet Beaver Creek, which all rose quickly as storms dumped rain across the high country, according to the report.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter for people forced from their homes.
In neighboring Cottonwood, some neighborhoods were also placed in ‘GO’ evacuation status as water levels climbed, KTAR News reported.
Parts of Yavapai, Coconino, Gila and Pinal counties received immediate evacuation orders during the weekend storms, according to KTAR News.
Emergency officials warned that rivers will keep running high and fast for days even though dry weather is in the forecast. They urged residents not to return to flooded areas until officials say it is safe.
