Big 12 admits BYU should not have been awarded touchdown against ASU

LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah

PROVO, Utah — The Big 12 has acknowledged that officials should not have awarded BYU a first-quarter touchdown in its win over Arizona State on Saturday, according to Arizona Sports.

On second-and-goal from the 1, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier fumbled while running up the middle, and running back Sione Moa recovered the ball.

Officials first ruled Bachmeier down by forward progress. After a review, they ruled it a fumble recovered by Moa, setting up third-and-goal. A second review then ruled that Moa had advanced the ball into the end zone, giving BYU a touchdown.

After the game, the Big 12 said in a statement that the touchdown should not have counted and that it should have been third-and-goal from the 2-yard line.

ASU coach Kenny Dillingham said after the game that he was disappointed with the call and did not think there was clear advancement on the play.

BYU won the game 27-20 in Jake Fette’s first start at quarterback for the Sun Devils.
