Baylor Leads Arizona State 14-3 Early in Maroon Monsoon Big 12 Clash

TEMPE — Baylor jumped out to a 14-3 lead over Arizona State late in the first quarter of Saturday night’s Maroon Monsoon Big 12 game at Mountain America Stadium, according to ESPN’s live box score as of about 8:20 p.m. MST.

Arizona State struck first when Carson Smith connected on a 46-yard field goal after a nine-play, 51-yard drive. Baylor answered immediately: true freshman running back Ryelan Morris ripped a 63-yard touchdown run to make it 7-3, then quarterback DJ Lagway hit Tony Livingston for a 3-yard score to stretch the lead to 14-3, ESPN play-by-play showed.

The Sun Devils entered 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 after a bye and a Sept. 19 win over Kansas in London. Baylor came in 3-1 and 1-0 in conference play. Kickoff was 7:30 p.m. MST on ESPN. ASU quarterback Cutter Boley was completing passes early but the Sun Devils also lost a fumble on a drive into Baylor territory, per Arizona Republic live updates.

This article updates an earlier Thee Arizona Times preview of the homecoming-style conference clash. The game remained in progress when this report was filed; final score and postgame comments will follow in a later update once the result is official.

A win would move either team to 2-0 in Big 12 play. Arizona State’s next home date on the published schedule is Oct. 10 against Hawaii.
