Commercial fisherman’s House bid puts Alaska Republicans on defense

Juneau, Alaska, from space

JUNEAU, Alaska — Independent Bill Hill, a Bristol Bay commercial fisherman and retired teacher, has Republicans worried about holding Alaska’s lone U.S. House seat, according to The Associated Press.

Hill, 57, is challenging Republican Rep. Nick Begich, who is seeking a second term. He took a break from campaigning this summer to fish the sockeye salmon run. ‘Commercial fishing is the way that we pay the bills,’ he said.

Hill, who is Alaska Native, is running on affordability and pushing back against billionaires. His campaign says he has traveled more than 20,000 miles across the state.

Vice President JD Vance held a rally for Begich and Sen. Dan Sullivan, and President Trump was scheduled to hold another, the AP reported.

Begich comes from a well-known political family; his grandfather and uncle both served in Congress as Democrats.
