SURPRISE — A 9-year-old girl has died after a four-vehicle crash on Grand Avenue near 163rd Avenue in Surprise on Friday evening, according to the Surprise Police Department.

Officers responded to the crash just before 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. Police said at the time that one person had been taken to a nearby hospital. On Saturday morning, police confirmed the patient was a 9-year-old girl and that she had died from her injuries.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the child’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” police said in a statement.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the collision. Police said impairment is not believed to have been a factor.

Friday evening, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced that the eastbound lanes of US 60, also known as Grand Avenue, were closed at 163rd Avenue because of a crash. In a follow-up release later that night, ADOT said the eastbound lanes had reopened and warned drivers to expect delays while the backup cleared. The westbound lanes were not affected, according to ADOT.

Police have not released the girl’s name or details about the other people involved.

ADOT reminds drivers that real-time highway conditions are available at az511.gov, on the AZ511 app or by calling 511.
