More than 100 Camp Verde homes flooded as Beaver Creek breaks its banks

The Verde River in Arizona

CAMP VERDE — More than 100 homes in Camp Verde were underwater Sunday night after Beaver Creek overflowed, and most were destroyed once the water drained away Monday, Arizona’s Family reported.

Homeowner Shanna Saunders walked through her house in 8 inches of mud on Monday. Her husband was inside when the creek rose, and a friend outside yelled for him to get out in time. “It could have been worse. I could have lost my husband,” she told Arizona’s Family.

Many families along the creek do not have flood insurance, the station reported.

Crews have made more than 60 rescues across Yavapai County since the flooding began Sunday, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, ABC15 reported. Sedona Fire said its crews made 27 swift-water rescues during the day and 12 more that evening.

In nearby Cottonwood, one family fled the rising Verde River with their two daughters, their dogs and 14 goats. When they returned Monday, the waterline was above their windows, ABC15 reported.

Deputies, government departments and utility companies are checking flooded areas to decide when it is safe for people to return, the sheriff’s office said. Two people died in Flagstaff during the storms, according to Arizona’s Family.

The Red Cross has shelters open. Anyone affected by the flooding can call 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767).
