PHOENIX — Maricopa County had already tabulated more than 1 million ballots by Monday afternoon, and officials said they are ready for Election Day, the Arizona Mirror reported.
The county has about 2.5 million registered voters. Officials expect about 250,000 people to vote in person on Tuesday, since only about 10% to 15% of voters usually choose to vote at the polls on Election Day.
The county will have 254 polling locations, 4,000 volunteer poll workers and 800 workers at the Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center, known as MCTEC, according to the Mirror.
“We have back ups to the back up plans,” said Jennifer Liewer, communications director for the County Elections Department. She warned that lines may grow longer later in the day as people head to the polls after work.
The first batch of results should be posted around 8 p.m., with another about an hour later, the county said. After that, updates will be posted twice a day in the evenings.
“Election results are never final on election night,” Assistant County Manager Zach Schira said, adding that counting will continue throughout the week.
County officials also said they had a productive meeting with the U.S. Department of Justice about federal election observers after raising concerns last week about one observer’s past conviction.
