SCOTTSDALE — Friday night’s storms knocked down or damaged 14 power poles in Scottsdale and left more than 2,100 APS customers in the dark at the peak, FOX 10 Phoenix reported.
Much of the damage was along Shea Boulevard near 70th Street, where crews worked through Halloween replacing poles and equipment. APS said the number of customers without power fell to about 17 after crews rerouted electricity and installed temporary cables.
The utility said restoration includes assessing damage, securing the area, removing debris, setting new poles and making repairs. About 100 crew members will have worked on the job by the time it is finished, APS said.
“We’ll probably have crews out here for a couple more days, but we also have more storms coming,” APS spokesperson Jill Hanks told FOX 10. She said crews can keep working in light rain but must stop for lightning or stronger storms.
Scottsdale Fire also had a busy night. Capt. Dave Folio said firefighters handled six simultaneous water rescues on Friday. “Crews were spread thin last night,” he said.
Folio said crews dried out their gear and readied throw bags for more storms over the weekend. APS said its in-house meteorologist is tracking conditions so crews can respond quickly if more damage hits.
