TUCSON — Tucson Unified School District has added two more schools to its closure and merger plans, bringing the total to 14 of the district’s 88 schools in 10 days, AZ Luminaria reported.

Cavett Elementary, with 169 students in a building designed for 530 and built in 1956, would merge with Utterback Middle School, which has 264 students, room for about 1,345 and was built in 1957. That change would take effect in the 2028-29 school year.

Ten schools are proposed for changes in 2027-28, according to AZ Luminaria, including Hudlow Elementary merging into Sewell, Dunham into Marshall, Cragin into Blenman, Collier into Bloom and Magee Middle School into Sabino High School. Secrist Middle School would merge into Santa Rita High School in 2028-29.

The district has cited declining enrollment and buildings running well below capacity.

The governing board is expected to vote on the plan in December. Families can find meeting schedules and proposals on TUSD’s website.
