Lula Wins Fourth Term in Brazil With 51.8%; Flávio Bolsonaro Refuses to Concede

SÃO PAULO — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won reelection Sunday, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro in a runoff and securing a fourth, non-consecutive term, CBS News reported.

With all votes counted, Brazil’s electoral court said Lula, who turns 81 this week, received 51.8% of the vote and led by nearly 4.4 million votes. Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, refused to concede and asked that the results be annulled, citing chaos at some polling places after a Supreme Court justice extended voting by two hours.

Lula’s victory runs counter to a recent trend of right-leaning, Trump-allied candidates winning in Latin America. It leaves left-of-center leaders in charge of the region’s two most populous countries, Brazil and Mexico.

Lula, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, is expected to keep resisting U.S. pressure, including higher tariffs. His new term begins Jan. 5, 2027.
