Serbia’s Vucic Concedes Defeat to Student-Led Opposition After 14 Years in Power

The House of the National Assembly in Belgrade, Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia — Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic conceded Sunday that his right-wing party lost parliamentary elections to a student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government, CBS News reported.

Vucic, who was endorsed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, said his Serbian Progressive Party projected the Students’ List would win 135 to 140 seats in the 250-member parliament, compared with about 105 for his party. He estimated the opposition received about 2.2 million votes to his party’s 1.7 million.

“The Students’ List has won,” Vucic told supporters, though he blamed Serbia’s independent media, unnamed European countries and an “American deep state” for the result.

Opposition supporters poured into the streets of Belgrade and other cities, honking horns and chanting. Vucic had dominated Serbian politics for 14 years.
