MESA — A 16-year-old was arrested after police say he fired at a security guard outside a private event in Mesa early Saturday, prompting the guard and an off-duty Mesa officer to shoot back, KTAR News reported.
Police said the teen was turned away from an event at a reception hall near Main Street and Stapley Drive around 1 a.m., then pulled a handgun and fired at the guard. As he ran toward a vehicle, the guard and the off-duty officer chased him and fired.
The teen fled across Main Street, where he ran into an on-duty officer, dropped the gun and was arrested. He was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. A man in a car associated with the teen was also hit and is expected to recover. The guard, the officer and bystanders were not hurt.
He was booked on counts including aggravated assault and attempted first-degree murder. Scottsdale police are investigating the shooting for the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team. Thee Arizona Times generally does not name juveniles accused of crimes.
