TEMPE — Arizona State is expected to name Colorado Avalanche assistant Dave Hakstol as its hockey coach while Greg Powers is on paid administrative leave, The Athletic reported Monday, according to KTAR News.
Powers was placed on leave Sept. 30 amid an independent investigation into the Aug. 20 collapse of sophomore defenseman Matthew Mayich during an outdoor, military-style workout led by a former Green Beret. Seven teammates wrote anonymously to ASU President Michael Crow saying safety policies had been ignored. A family attorney said Mayich remains in critical condition.
Hakstol was the first coach of the expansion Seattle Kraken and also coached the Philadelphia Flyers, compiling a 241-213-69 record in seven NHL seasons. Before that he went 289-143-43 in 11 seasons at North Dakota, with six Frozen Four appearances.
His first games could come this weekend when ASU hosts UMass Lowell.
