CINCINNATI — A jury on Friday convicted Rodney Hinton Jr. of murder for striking and killing a retired Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy with his car the day after his teenage son was fatally shot by a Cincinnati police officer, the Associated Press reported.
Hinton was also found guilty of reckless homicide and felonious assault in last year’s crash that killed Deputy Larry Ray Henderson Jr., who was directing traffic for a college graduation. Henderson had retired a few months earlier after decades with the sheriff’s office but was still working off-duty assignments.
Hinton had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. His attorney argued he was suicidal and in a psychotic episode, while prosecutors said that despite his grief he chose to aim his car at the deputy and understood right from wrong.
Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey said the verdict brought some closure. Defense attorney Clyde Bennett II said he will appeal.
Hinton faces 15 years to life in prison on the murder count.
