Mariam Creighton, a 21-year-old college volleyball player, had the world at her feet. As a student-athlete at Albany State University, she excelled both on and off the court. Her untimely death in a tragic nightclub shooting in Atlanta has left her family, friends, and the sports community in shock.
Rising Star on the Court

Mariam was more than just a volleyball player; she was a force to be reckoned with. Her defensive skills as a libero were unmatched. She made her international debut at the Volleyball Nations League, proudly representing the United States. During her college career, she anchored the Stanford teamโs defense, contributing to three NCAA titles in four years (2016, ’18, ’19). Mariamโs versatility extended to beach volleyball, where she also competed for the university.
A Life Cut Short
On the night of May 12, Mariam was celebrating her nieceโs birthday at the Elleven45 lounge in Buckhead, Atlanta. A fight erupted, and bullets started flying. By the time the gunfire ceased, Mariam was dead. Her 22-year-old niece, Taylor Holmes, was injured but stable. The shooting also claimed the life of 20-year-old Nakyris Ridley, and three others are still being treated for injuries.
A Legacy of Talent and Determination
Mariam was not only successful on the volleyball court but also academically. She was one semester away from graduating with a degree in biology. Her family remembers her as a talented young woman who could build anything, from points on the court to her dreams of a bright future.
As the investigation continues, Mariamโs family pleads for justice. They want her memory to live on, not as a victim of senseless violence, but as a beacon of talent, determination, and love.
Mariam Creightonโs legacy will forever echo through the volleyball community, reminding us to cherish every moment and honor those taken too soon.
Teammates Speak
- Alexis Ramirez (Teammate):
- โMariam was our anchor. On the court, sheโd dive for impossible saves, lifting our spirits. Off the court, sheโd listen, encourage, and remind us that we were a family.โ
- Coach Sarah Lawson:
- โMariamโs work ethic was contagious. Sheโd stay late after practice, perfecting her digs. But she also pushed her teammatesโmade them believe they could achieve greatness.โ
Friendship Beyond Volleyball
- Taylor Holmes (Friend and Niece):
- โMariam was my rock. Weโd laugh, cry, and dream together. Sheโd say, โLifeโs like a tough serveโkeep your eye on the ball and swing.โโ
- Jordan Harris (Childhood Friend):
- โWeโd play beach volleyball on weekends. Mariamโs smile was infectious. Sheโd say, โWin or lose, the sun still rises. Letโs play!โโ
ย In addition to Mariam Creighton, the other victim tragically lost in the shooting at the Elleven45 Lounge in Buckhead, Atlanta, was 20-year-old Nakyris M. Ridley. Ridleyโs life was cut short alongside Mariamโs, leaving behind a community in mourning. While Mariamโs legacy shines brightly as a rising volleyball star, we also remember Nakyris and the impact this senseless violence has had on their families and friends. The investigation continues, and our hearts go out to both victims and their loved ones during this difficult time.
