MESA — Two people were hospitalized early Saturday after a shooting involving an off-duty Mesa police officer and a security guard outside a reception hall, police said, KTAR News reported.
It happened about 1:05 a.m. outside Versalles Reception Hall near Main Street and Stapley Drive. Police said a boy tried to get into a private event, was turned away, then pulled out a handgun and fired at a security guard.
The boy ran toward a vehicle, and the guard and an off-duty Mesa officer followed and shot at him, according to police.
He fled south across Main Street, where he ran into an on-duty patrol officer, tossed his handgun to the ground and was taken into custody, police said. The investigation is continuing.
