PHOENIX — A wall of dust followed by thunderstorms swept across metro Phoenix on Saturday afternoon, delaying hundreds of flights and cutting power to thousands of homes, KTAR News reported.
The dust moved into the West Valley around 12:45 p.m., prompting a dust storm warning from the National Weather Service with gusts up to 45 mph.
Rain and storms behind it led to a ground stop at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The stop was later lifted, but left a ground delay of 168 minutes. As of 3:30 p.m., the airport’s website listed 227 delayed flights and two cancellations.
More than 1,100 Arizona Public Service customers and about 2,500 Salt River Project customers lost power. Forecasters expected scattered showers and storms to continue on and off through the rest of the day.
