Tom Skerritt, the veteran actor known for “Alien,” “Top Gun” and the TV drama “Picket Fences,” has died at 93, his family told The Hollywood Reporter. He died Wednesday of natural causes.
Skerritt earned two Emmy nominations for “Picket Fences” and won outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 1993. His film work also included “The Turning Point” with Shirley MacLaine, “Steel Magnolias” as Sally Field’s husband and “Contact” opposite Jodie Foster.
On stage, he narrated “Our Town” at Seattle’s Intiman Theatre in 2004 and made his Broadway debut in 2013 in an adaptation of John Grisham’s “A Time to Kill.”
His family said he cared deeply about “imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world and helping others find and share their own voices.”
Skerritt is survived by his wife, Julie Tokashiki, five children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
