Health Officials Probe Whether Nigeria’s and Kenya’s First Ebola Patients Crossed Paths

JOHANNESBURG — Nigeria’s first Ebola patient in more than a decade may have crossed paths with Kenya’s first patient at an airport in Uganda, health officials said Thursday, according to NPR.

Nigerian authorities said the patient is the Ugandan-born wife of a diplomat posted in Abuja who vacationed in Uganda in September and returned to Nigeria this month. She is being treated, and 44 close contacts are in quarantine, said Dr. Wessam Mankoula of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Investigators are still trying to pin down how she was exposed.

Nigeria is the fourth African country to report a case in the current outbreak and the first in West Africa, far from the epicenter in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kenyan officials this week reported their ninth case.
