PHOENIX — Drivers on Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Casa Grande are seeing the first new pavement for a long-awaited third lane, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a news release Thursday.
Crews with the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project are laying 10 miles of asphalt in the median of eastbound I-10 near State Route 387. The work is part of the Gas Line Road to south of SR 387 segment, one of four pieces of the project that began active construction in January.
Along with a third general-purpose lane in each direction, the segment includes a rebuilt I-10/SR 387 and Pinal Avenue interchange, a new interchange at Seed Farm Road, a wider Gas Line Road bridge and the removal of the Dirk Lay Road bridge. ADOT is also adding freeway cameras, overhead message boards and wrong-way driver detection.
The full 26-mile project is meant to ease congestion on one of the state’s busiest commuter and freight routes. ADOT expects all four segments to be finished by late 2029.
