Rep. Ilhan Omar said Wednesday she will move out of her Washington, D.C., home after federal agents searched it last week, saying the attention has left her feeling unsafe there, the Associated Press reported.
A person briefed on the case told the AP that authorities are investigating possible fraud in her family’s immigration paperwork and have subpoenaed some relatives. The Justice Department has said only that it is a criminal investigation.
In her first interview since the search, with MS NOW, Omar said Homeland Security investigators arrived around 6 a.m. with a warrant and seized 17 items, including phones, notebooks and a Somali-language children’s book. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said.
Omar came to the U.S. at 12 after her family received asylum and became a citizen in 2000. She is expected to win reelection in her Minneapolis district on Nov. 3.
